DOWNHILL SKIING & SNOWBOARDING

Saskadena Six Ski Area: A mere 10 minutes' drive from 506, there isn't a ski hill more accessible than Saskadena Six Ski Area. Deadly name aside, it's also family-friendly! 30% of the trails are rated as beginner terrain, 40% as intermediate and 30% as advanced - with the longest run spanning 5,280 feet. And as the site of America's first tow rope – powered by Ford Model Tengine, no less – it offers not just 3 lifts and 24 trails for snowy joyriding, but also a slice of history. Hours of operation: 9AM–4PM Wednesday through Sunday

Killington Mountain Resort and Pico Mountain: The Big K. The Beast of the East. No matter the nickname, Killington is revered as the largest ski mountain on the east coast boasting the longest season by far. Less than 30 minutes from Woodstock, 212 trails weave their way down the second highest peak in the state – with bunny slopes, terrain parks, and double black diamonds alike. Nearby Pico Mountain, like Killington's little sibling, offers 57 trails with a summit elevation of 3,967 feet.

NORDIC SKIING AND SNOWSHOEING

The Woodstock Inn & Resort Nordic Center: For access to a serene winter wonderland with stunning vistas – all within Woodstock's village, secure a pass at the Nordic Center in the Woodstock Country. The pass affords 40 km of maintained wooded trails across Mt Peg and Mt Tom. A picturesque cabin in the woods of Marsh-Billings-Rocke - feller National Historical Park is the cherry on top, supplying the perfect spot for a mid-trek break. The remaining 23 km of trails on Mt Tom are left in their natural state for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing, and are free for general use.

FAT TIRE BIKING

When the snow gets deep and heavy, fat biking is a boon for those who can't wait to get out on two wheels! The Woodstock Inn & Resort Nordic Center's network of village-adjacent trails mentioned above is available for this high-impact sport (bike rentals available). Just outside of Woodstock's village, you'll find another bounty of options fit for snow-loving bikers, such as the Aqueduct Trails, and Ascutney Trails.

SLEDDING AND TUBING

Killington Tubing Park: Slide solo to the bottom or race your friends to the bottom of this multi-lane park, complete lift service for easy trips up and down. See www.killington.com for rates and dates.

SNOWMOBILING

With the wind on your face, you'll whip through trees stooped with snow on a thrilling snowmobile ride through Vermont's backcountry. Secure a guided one-hour, two-hour, or kid-friendly tour of Killington through Snowmobile - Vermont.com or go solo after joining VAST, an organization responsible for maintaining and grooming over 4 ,700 miles of trails in Vermont.

ICE SKATING

Take a breath of cold, crisp air then hit the ice close to home on Vail Field in Woodstock Village, Lakeland Hole #1's pond at the Quechee Club (activity subject to change due to COVID-19), or take a glide across Silver Lake in Barnard for a quiet, pristine setting (conditions permitting for all).

Woodstock Window Shopping:

If your plans to hit the slopes were thwarted by the balmy temperatures, be sure to check out the village of Wood - stock instead! 506 On The River Inn is on the outskirts of the historic and renowned town decorated with Christmas lights and wreaths, and a trolley operates to take people a round the streets. Visitors can spend hours exploring the variety of retail stores, art galleries, an tique shops, restaurants and bistros, a bookshop, and much more . Be sure to pose for pictures by the old covered bridge and on the town green — both are New England icons!

Billings Farm and Museum

One of the most popular destinations in Woodstock, Billings Farm and Museum is home to a working farm that hosts a variety of activities every day, from meeting the sheep and cows, learning how to churn butter or learning to milk, dipping candles, and much more.

The Quechee Gorge Village

The Quechee Gorge Village features several shops that offer ant iques, collectibles, craft dealers, local Vermont cheeses, spirits and gifts shops. It is located adjacent to the Ottauqueechee River's (the same river behind the Inn) 165 foot deep Quechee Gorge, the deepest in Vermont. A bridge runs over the gorge and has walkways for viewing.

An enchanting spot to watch professional glass blowers work their magic creating some of the finest hand blown glass items in the world. VINS

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science is home to a mini museum, hiking trails, and most notably, a bird rehabilitation center. When a local raptor is injured, either by cars, predators or other dangers, VINS staff take care of it and nurse it back to health, and then either rehabilitate it in their facilities until it is ready to be released back into the wild, or provide a permanent home for it if releasing it is not an option. Montshire Museum

Who says your kids can't learn while they're on vacation? A visit to the Montshire Museum will have them learning and having fun as they explore all the interactive exhibits of which there are over 125. Exhibits include tanks of fishes and frogs, a clear glass honey bee cage to see the inside workings of their hive and a clear glass ant farm, blowing giant bubbles, viewing a Rube Goldberg-esque design, and so much more.
